Game 6 - 3pmvs. Springfield Technical Community College, Mass. (90)-OT
The second game in the second round of the NCJAA Tournament began with a back and forth battle between Springfield Technical Community College and Middlesex County College. Springfield trailed by three points early in the game before Edgar Martinez hit a shot from the floor to pull them within one point. The lead then see-sawed back and forth before Springfield guard Michael Booker hit a three-pointer from the corner to give them a 34-36 lead. From then on Springfield's hustle and fast-break baskets helped give them a 42-37 lead going into the half. Springfield started the second half strong. Playing tough defense, they dominated the floor enroute to a 12-0 run that gave them a 15-point lead. Edgar Martinez scored eight straight points with Roberts Hopkins' three-pointer and easy lay up that gave Springfield a 22-point lead. Coming out of a timeout, Middlesex picked up their intensity. They began to close in on the lead playing stifling defense and hitting key jump shots. An assist from Manuel Perrotte to Robert Hopkins, followed by a steal and easy basket off the inbound pass, pulled Middlesex within three points with less than a minute to go. Springfield responded quickly with a layup from Rick Johnson with 42.7 seconds left in the game to give them a 76-80 lead.
Aggressive defense after a Springfield timeout by Middlesex guard Manual Perrotte forced Michael Booker to turn the ball over, giving the Colts the chance to close in on the 77-80 Springfield lead. Middlesex guard Kevin Womack hit a clutch three-pointer off of an offensive rebound to tie the game with 11.4 seconds to go. With yet another quick response, Springfield guard Rick Johnson penetrated the lane and found an open Edgar Martinez for an easy lay up to take the lead with 1.4 seconds left in the game. Just as the game seemed to be over, a long pass from Middlesex's Manual Perrotte to their big man Antwan Brinson, who sealed his man off and made the easy layup, to tie the game just as the final buzzer sounded, sending the game into overtime with a score of 82-82. With the intensity out of the roof at the start of overtime Middlesex guard Sean Ogunnoiki was able to capitalize off of a steal and make an easy fast break layup, putting them up one point with 2:08 left to play. On the next trip down the court, Springfield guard Robert Hopkins was fouled while shooting a three-pointer. Making all three foul shots, he put Springfield back on top 88-86. Springfield came down the court after a good defensive stand with intentions to close the game out, but tough defense by Middlesex forced a shot clock violation, giving them yet another chance. With 32.3 seconds left in overtime, Middlesex guard Kevin Womack was fouled while going up for a layup. He was able to pull them within one point by converting one of the two foul shots. Forced to foul, Middlesex grabbed Springfield guard Rick Johnson to send him to the line where he missed both free throws that could have put the Colts up by three points. With a chance to win the game Middlesex's, Sean Ogunnoiki went up for a layup that was blocked by Springfield's Ulysses Wannamaker. Springfield guard Robert Hopkins was then fouled where he would hit both free throws and give Springfield the final lead of 87-90. High scorers for the game were Springfield Technical Community College's Edgar Martinez who scored a game high of 30 points while grabbing a game high of 16 rebounds. Middlesex County College's scoring leaders were Rodney Freeney with 22 points and Kevin Womack with 21 points. Springfield Technical Community College, Mass.
